User Reviews about RCA RP5640 CD Clock Radio with Auto Time Set

I've had this product for 2 years. Great features, pick your wake up tune on the CD, and then it will play randomly, if you want all the rest. Does not accept mp3 cd's. You get to choose your color of display, has 2 alarms, present AM-FM tuning, will wake you to cd, radio, or beeper. Has weather radio built in and keeps time accurately. Has lots of buttons on the top, face and lower front but are poorly marked and you really have to get into it with the used guide to figure them out. If you need glasses to see up close you better get them out.
So why do I say "skip it"? The cd loading mechanism lifts the face and rotates it forward. It worked great for over a year but then trouble began. It would open ok but when closing it would start chattering instead of shutting down the drive. I fiddled with it for a few months and kept it going but finally the cd just wouldn't play. I opened the unit up and upon careful inspection discovered that the gear system was supported by a plastic frame and it had cracked so under the torque needed to close the face it would deform and the gears would slip and chatter.
I paid $66 at Circuit City in 2008 so the current price is a good deal but check the other reviews - others have had the same problem. Too bad they didn't engineer that one part just a little bit better. -- SKIP IT!
My wife has owned her radio for about 5 years. Two weeks ago, the door began to make a noise as it closed over the CD. My son found that this clicking noise could be stopped if a shim was placed under the door. To the best of my knowledge, a shim about 3/16th of an inch thick worked for her door. You can use a few popsicle sticks stacked upon each other, and taped together, and then taped into place where the bottom of the door tries to go, should do it. The sticks should be small enough to sit on the bottom without sticking out, so that the door can more fully open when it wants to open, but is prevented from fully setting down to the bottom when it wants to close. This shim should be taped into place so that it does not fall out, etc. -- Clicking noise and door problems solved
